How to Use Price Alerts

What is a Price Alert?
Price Alerts are reports in Agronometrics created when the average daily price of a commodity has risen or fallen by more than a specific threshold calculated to create approximately 12 reports a year.

Accessing Price Alerts

Price Alerts are accessible from:
- The emails automatically sent as soon as they are created
- The Dashboard
- The Price Alerts box within the Market Updates section
- The Price Alerts section of the website

Navigating the Price Alerts section
At the top left-hand section of the report you will find the current date for which reports are created. If there is a report associated with any of your commodities, it will be made available in the box below. Otherwise, the message ‘No alerts today’ will appear.

Navigation options
On the right-hand side, the dropdown menu offers the ability to view the latest price alerts for all your commodities, or the ability to select a specific commodity. By default, all commodities will be selected when landing on this page.

Previous Price Alert selector
The list on the right-hand side of the Price Alerts section shows the last five reports for the commodities associated with your account. This is the same list that is available in the Dashboard. Filtering by a commodity will offer the latest price alerts for any given commodity. The same list will be available in the Market Updates section.

Report title
Once a report has been selected, at the top of the report you will find an icon of the commodity that is being summarized. Next to the icon you will see the date that the alert was created and the title of the report.

Report summary statistics
Following the title box, the summary statistics offer a snapshot of the market data that was used to create the alert. The first metric is the percentage difference from the previous price, with an arrow indicating if the change is positive or negative. The second metric to the right is the average price of the report, which is accompanied bellow by the same metric for the previous price reported. Lastly, these statistics are summarized in a short text.

Market Price charts

The market price chart offers a summary of the daily USDA Shipping Point prices. The chart compares a relevant parameter for the commodity of the report. That parameter can be Origin, Size, Market, Variety, etc. We have tried to select the most relevant parameter, but it may not be the only one available. Below the chart is a table that reports the same values of the chart for that day.

Under the title there is also a link that offers the ability to view the same information as a market report, where it can be modified to better fit your needs. For a Price Alert that was created in the past, this link will open the same Market Report updated with the latest available data.

How much historical data was used to calculate these thresholds?

As the prices of the commodities we work with are volatile, we periodically adjust them so that they best represent the present reality. The above limits are calculated using the daily prices of each commodity from January 2, 2017 through March 20, 2020.
